Write Your Paper

Weeded? No way. Follow the plan you've made for your paper. All the points, details, and resources you need are right there in your outline.

Finding your own voice and avoiding plagiarism

  • Writing papers is an exercise in finding, reading, understanding, and then using information
  • Plagiarism is taking another person's words or ideas and passing them off as your own - this includes copying & pasting without giving credit both in the body of your paper and in your works cited list
  • When students plagiarize, they find and then steal information - they miss the opportunity to learn to use information
  • Your instructors know you -- how you sound and talk about things -- and they want to hear your voice in your paper
  • If you want to use someone else's words to stress a point or clarify an idea, go for it!  Just be sure to give that person credit in the paper  (As Dr. Jones writes, "The theory that..." or In his book Kitchen Confidential, Anthony Bourdain describes ...) and in your works cited list

First draft:

write for content - get your thoughts down and don't worry if things are a bit rough

Second draft:

revise your first draft - rework awkward or confusing elements - look for holes

Final draft:

revise your second draft - this is where you really polish things up into a final product -

thoroughly proofread your final draft - have someone else read your paper - edit again if necessary

Last step: Cite your sources
